AAPI Victory Alliance Reflects on the Second Anniversary of the Violent January 6 Capitol Insurrection

WASHINGTON — Today, on the second anniversary of the January 6 Insurrection, AAPI Victory Alliance released a statement commemorating the treasonous attack on democracy and highlighting the urgent need to expand voting rights.

AAPI Victory Alliance Executive Director Varun Nikore issued the following statement:

Two years ago today, we watched in horror as an armed mob of white supremacists descended on the United States Capitol with one goal: to assault Democracy and prevent a peaceful transition of power. This violent coup, incited by former President Trump, was designed to undermine and overturn free and fair elections where both Democratic and Republican candidates were duly elected.”

“In the two years following one of the darkest days in modern U.S. history, almost 900 insurrectionists have been charged and the Justice Department holds a criminal referral to prosecute the former president for his treasonous role in sparking this deadly coup. While the new GOP House majority marks an end to the bipartisan January 6th Committee, the horrific details of that day remain burned in our consciousness.”

“This is why I am proud to represent AAPI Victory Alliance’s urgent work to expand voting rights and strengthen the state of our democracy. Our nation stood petrified as we watched the terrifying events of January 6, 2021 unfold before us. We can’t let something like this happen again, and that starts by fighting the proliferation of legislation introduced to suppress everyone’s equal right to vote.”
