STATEMENT: AAPI Victory Alliance Endorses Leading AAPI Candidates for Key Races in Texas

WASHINGTON — Today, AAPI Victory Alliance announced its endorsements for Texas’ midterm elections. Among the endorsements are House candidate Becca Moyer DeFelice, House candidate Salman Bhojani, and House candidate Dr. Suleman Lalani.

The AAPI community is Texas’ fastest-growing population, making up more than 5% of the population. There are more AAPIs in Texas than all the other battleground states. Despite being the fastest-growing voting group, AAPIs are vastly underrepresented in elected office.

AAPI Victory Alliance Executive Director Varun Nikore issued the following statement:

“AAPI Victory Alliance is proud to endorse this cohort of AAPI candidates who are dedicated to fighting for the future of all Texans: Becca Moyer DeFelice, Salman Bhojani, and Dr. Suleman Lalani for their respective races. As the AAPI community continues to grow in the Lone Star State, electing leaders who are dedicated to the future and well-being of their communities is of the utmost importance.”

“Our country continues to reel from the effects of anti-Asian hate crimes, acts of gun violence, and attacks against our key civil rights and liberties, and the candidates we elect in November will determine the fate of our democracy. With Texas’ rapidly-empurpling electorate, paired with the state’s fast-growing AAPI community, we at AAPI Victory Alliance recognize that these exemplary candidates represent both the diverse landscape of Texas’ many communities and the future of American politics.”

“We are honored to endorse this cohort of candidates and we look forward to the thoughtfulness, equity, and accessibility they will bring to office.”

Texas House of Representatives (HD-121) Candidate Becca Moyer DeFelice issued the following statement:

“I am proud to be endorsed by AAPI Victory Alliance as I run to become the first Korean American woman elected to the Texas state house.”

“It is so important for AAPI Texans to have representation in every part of American life as we continue to build a foundation for future generations to achieve their own American Dream.”

Texas House of Representatives (HD-92) Candidate Salman Bhojani issued the following statement:

“I am honored to be endorsed by AAPI Victory Alliance. If elected, I will be the first South Asian to serve in the Texas Legislature. We need more firsts of this kind all across the country, and AAPI Victory Alliance is laying the groundwork for that success.”

Texas House of Representatives (HD-76) Candidate Dr. Suleman Lalani issued the following statement:

"This campaign is about securing representation for the AAPI Community in Texas. If elected, we’ll make history as the first South Asian and first Muslim to serve in the Texas Legislature."
