STATEMENT: AAPI Victory Alliance on the Horrifying Uvalde School Shooting

WASHINGTON — Today, AAPI Victory Alliance Executive Director Varun Nikore issued the following statement in response to the horrific mass shooting at a Texas elementary school in Uvalde:

“Yesterday, nineteen innocent children, and two adults, were murdered in an unfathomable, evil attack. This morning, most of America is asking what President Biden asked last night when he addressed the nation: “When are we going to do what we all know in our gut needs to be done.”

“Thoughts and prayers are important for us to offer, but are an insufficient answer to the parents who lost their children, to the community that has been shattered and to the nation who continues to wonder how our government became so broken that they can’t do the simplest thing possible to protect its citizens– enact meaningful gun control measures.

“The attack yesterday, like the attack last week in Buffalo and the attacks we continue to experience on a now-regular basis in our country, against our most vulnerable communities are enabled by the callous disregard that some in the U.S. Senate have for the lives of their fellow Americans. Today I ask every U.S. Senator who is currently standing in the way of meaningful gun control measures why they are even there—and remind them that the millions of AAPI American voters who are wondering the same are watching.”
