STATEMENT: AAPI Victory Alliance on the 2024 GOP Presidential Debate
WASHINGTON — Last night, the GOP held its first 2024 presidential debate where the candidates sidestepped issues that Asian Americans deeply care about including climate change and gun violence prevention.
AAPI Victory Alliance Executive Director Varun Nikore issued the following statement:
“What we learned last night is that this Republican presidential field is drastically out of touch with the American people. When given the opportunity to lay out a plan for gun violence prevention, they sidestepped the question—because they know they’re on the wrong side of the issues. When asked about climate change, not one candidate on the debate stage took the opportunity to show an ounce of empathy for the 115 lives lost and thousands of homes and businesses destroyed in the Maui wildfires. Giving non-answers to questions about AAPI voter’s top issue priorities certainly did not earn them any electoral points with the nation’s fastest growing electorate.”
