AAPI Victory Alliance Solemnly Commemorates the 50th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Urging Congress to Protect Reproductive Rights

WASHINGTON — Today, the AAPI Victory Alliance released a statement commemorating the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, and reiterating its commitment to fighting the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs ruling, which dismantled constitutional protections of abortions federally.

AAPI Victory Alliance Vice Chair and Former Executive Vice President of SEIU Luisa Blue issued the following statement:

“Today marks the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, giving us an opportunity to honor the generations before us who stood strong, unwavering in their fight to secure safe and legal access to abortion nationwide. We must recognize the enormity of their collective work and continue their legacy in the fight ahead.”

“Since the overturning of Roe this summer, I have felt an overwhelming mix of grief and possibility. Republicans continue to attack abortion access throughout the country, and the fight for abortion access continues. From the electoral wins on election day to the FDA green light for pharmaceutical abortion pills, to dozens of legal challenges to state abortion bans, our momentum grows. Let me be clear: the fight to secure women’s fundamental right to reproductive health care is far from over.”

“As we settle into the post-Roe reality, we stand galvanized by a surge in organizing energy, ready for the new year of possibility for reproductive rights and an opportunity to reimagine abortion access from the ground up.”

AAPI Victory Alliance Board Member and Founder of Asian Americans Rising Katie Nguyen Kalvoda issued the following statement:

“On the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we must talk about reproductive freedom. Reproductive freedom – the freedom of choice and women’s rights – has always been bigger than Roe; Roe set the floor, but not the ceiling. And as this monumental ruling has eroded, leaving abortion access to the whims of those in power, our nation is left vulnerable, but we are equipped with a rare opportunity to reimagine the future of women’s rights.”

“With the stripping of safe and legal federal access to reproductive healthcare, those without resources have borne the brunt of this harm. People of color, immigrant communities, low-income individuals, and LGBTQ+ people are disproportionately affected by these unjust laws. I urge Congress to take swift action in codifying federal protections to ensure that women’s health and reproductive choice are a fundamental human right.”

AAPI Victory Alliance Board Member and AAPI Progressive Action Chair Tung Nguyen issued the following statement:

“It is infuriating that Roe did not make it to its 50th anniversary. Instead of celebrating half a centennial of life-saving access to abortion, this year we are mourning the federal protection that was destroyed when the Supreme Court endorsed extremist ideology, endangering millions across our nation.”

“Attacks on reproductive autonomy harm more than just women; these attacks threaten everyone. Men need to speak out against the deprivation of fundamental human rights and march forward in the fight for true reproductive justice.”
