STATEMENT: AAPI Victory Alliance Urges Congress to Codify Full Access to Abortion Care

WASHINGTON— Last week, an extremist, conservative Supreme Court overturned 50 years of precedent in Roe v. Wade. By upholding Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Court dismantled the right of all to abortion care. Now it’s time for Congress to codify access to abortion care, and to protect other rights that are dependent on the legal arguments Roe was anchored in for half a century — rights now equally at risk.

AAPI Victory Alliance Vice Chair Luisa Blue issued the following statement:

“This is a grim day for women in need of access to reproductive healthcare across the country. Each and every person residing in the United States should have the ability to access abortion care regardless of where you live, your race, income level, or immigration status. If this conservative bench is unwilling to protect our rights to abortion care, Congress must act to codify that right.

“The Court’s ruling on Dobbs is a complete and utter loss, both for the women throughout Mississippi, and in all states where legislators stand poised to ban abortion. By overturning Roe and taking away the federal right to abortion, the conservative justices have given extremist legislatures the go-ahead to enforce stringent abortion bans nationwide.”

“Let us not forget that those who will be most impacted by this decision are people who already face near-insurmountable barriers to reproductive health care. For people of color, LGBTQ+ folks, immigrants and people with low incomes, this decision will disproportionately prohibit their ability to access life-saving care. This affront to our fundamental rights should spur every member of Congress to take swift action. As constituents, we expect no less.”

AAPI Victory Alliance Board Member Lala Wu issued the following statement:

“Last month, I took my daughter to her first protest. I saw a sign that said: ‘I marched with my mother... I never imagined I'd have to march with my daughter.’

“I'm recommitting to fighting so when she's old enough to march enough on her own someday, maybe with her own daughter, it won't be to protest rights being taken away, but to expand rights and freedoms --- for all of us.”

AAPI Victory Alliance Chair and co-founder Dr. Tung Nguyen issued the following statement:

“This is not only an attack on women; but an attack on all families. Men need to join the fight against this restriction on all of our liberties.”

AAPI Victory Alliance Executive Director Varun Nikore issued the following statement:

“As a man, as a father to my daughter and as my mother’s son, I fear we are headed towards a world where future generations have less rights than what they are entitled to.  Our organization will fight with all that we have until those inherent rights are restored and finally achieved.”
