STATEMENT: AAPI Victory Alliance Reflects on the 40th Anniversary of the Murder of Vincent Chin

WASHINGTON — As we mark the 40th anniversary of the murder of Vincent Chin, AAPI Victory Alliance released a statement in commemoration of Vincent Chin’s life, the strides AAPIs have made toward equitable inclusion and political representation, and the many obstacles left to overcome.

AAPI Victory Alliance Executive Director Varun Nikore issued the following statement: 

“Against the backdrop of our country’s long legacy of xenophobia and violence, we commemorate the life of Vincent Chin, a Chinese American who lost his life in 1982 as a result of tensions catalyzed by the American politicians who wanted to exploit the automotive crisis for political gain. 

“It’s been 40 years since Vincent Chin lost his life, yet his murder and the xenophobia perpetuated by people in positions of power, continue to cast a long shadow over AAPI communities. Anti-AAPI hate crimes increased over 300 percent last year alone, and politicians remain entrenched in perpetuating narratives that pit “outsiders” against “Americans” when, in reality, ours is a nation wholly constructed and inhabited by  immigrants.” 

“While we remember Vincent Chin’s legacy, and acknowledge 40 years of progress towards inclusion and increased representation in politics, we must not lose sight of the work left ahead. Until each and every American has equitable access to the ballot box, can send their children to school or go to the supermarket free from worry about gun violence, and trust their representatives to center all people in their policy making, we will continue to fight for  justice, equity, and liberation for our communities.”
