STATEMENT: Remembering Trayvon Martin, and the Ongoing Need for Gun Violence Prevention

WASHINGTON — Ahead of tomorrow's 10-year anniversary of the murder of Trayvon Martin, AAPI Victory Alliance released a statement in commemoration of the life of Trayvon Martin and to highlight the continued need for gun violence prevention nationwide.

AAPI Victory Alliance Executive Director Varun Nikore issued the following statement:

Ten years ago, our nation was rocked by the murder of Trayvon Martin. That day should have been a wake-up call to address the unchecked gun violence across our country but since then, countless other lives have been lost, and few steps have been taken to truly reform gun control policy. Ten years later, gun violence remains a public health issue, a human rights issue, and a racial justice issue.”

“As we remember the life of Trayvon Martin, we must too remember that communities of color have long borne the burden of gun violence. Future acts of violence will not cease until we actively address the ease of access to firearms in America, as well as the increase in white supremacy and hate that we’ve seen in recent years.”
