STATEMENT: AAPI Victory Alliance on the First-Anniversary of the Dobbs Decision
WASHINGTON — Today, one year after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Executive Director Varun Nikore issued the following statement on behalf of AAPI Victory Alliance:
“One year ago, the majority-conservative Supreme Court made the decision to take away a constitutional right from millions of people across this country — one that put the health and privacy of anyone who can get pregnant at risk. We knew then, and it’s been proven now, that overturning Roe v. Wade, and half a century of legal precedent, would disproportionately impact communities of color. Among those most impacted have been AAPIs who already struggled to access healthcare before the Dobbs decision.
We know abortion care is healthcare, and AAPIs support abortion rights at some of the highest rates in the country. It’s an issue that drove us to turn out the vote in 2022 and one that will drive us to the ballot box again in 2024. Up and down the ticket we will elect representatives who will expand access to safe, legal abortion nationwide. Abortion care didn’t die with Roe — it only woke up a generation of AAPI activists who will fight with all they’ve got until their right to reproductive autonomy — free of political interference — is restored.”
