AAPI Victory Alliance Endorses AAPI Candidates in Virginia Ahead of 2023 Primary Elections

WASHINGTON — Today, AAPI Victory Alliance announced the endorsement of two Asian American candidates in Virginia: Shyamali Hauth for District 7 House of Delegates and Saddam Salim for District 37 State Senate.

AAPI Victory Alliance Executive Director Varun Nikore issued the following statement:

“On behalf of AAPI Victory Alliance, I am proud to announce our endorsements of Shyamali Hauth and Saddam Salim—two trailblazing AAPI candidates who offer inspiring visions for the future of Virginia and bold plans for addressing the gun violence epidemic that has touched their state as it has many others.

Shyamali is running to keep her community safe from gun violence; she is calling for the elimination of weapons of war from the streets of Virginia and expanded child safety protections. Hauth has the courage and the plan to pass critical gun safety measures that will transform public safety in Virginia, and she has a track record lobbying for gun control to prove it.

As a Virginia Senator, Salim will fight for legislation to protect all Virginians from gun violence, calling for an assault weapons ban and expanded restrictions to keep firearms out of the hands of domestic abusers. Saddam Salim will be accountable to Virginians—not the gun lobby like his opponent. And when elected, he won’t just push for gun safety policy, he’ll hold Republicans accountable who stand in the way of progress.

AAPI Victory Alliance is committed to building Asian American political power across the country, especially in local government. We throw our full support behind Shyamali Hauth and Saddam Salim and look forward to supporting these extraordinary candidates.”

Shyamali Hauth issued the following statement:

“As an Indian American immigrant, I'm honored and excited to accept the endorsement of AAPI Victory Alliance. Whether through my work as the first Vice Chair for the Democratic Asian Americans of Virginia or as the Mid-Atlantic & Southern Regional Director for South Asians for America — I have always fought for AAPIs to have a seat at the table. My goal, clear and simple, is for everyone in our community to have the chance to thrive. I am grateful for the support of AAPI Victory Alliance and look forward to working on behalf of the AAPI community, and all communities, in the Virginia House of Delegates.”

Saddam Salim issued the following statement:

“My story growing up in a first-generation immigrant family from Bangladesh is one that would not be possible without the caring members of the Falls Church community. I've seen firsthand the real impacts that affordable housing, accessible healthcare, quality education and community support can have on our lives, and I'm running to give back to the community that took a chance on my family when we were homeless on the streets of Washington D.C. I could not be more proud to receive an endorsement from AAPI Victory Alliance as I fight to ensure that all Virginians have the same support my family did as we began our lives in America.”
