One Year After the Robb Elementary School Shooting, AAPI Victory Alliance Demands Gun Violence Prevention Action

WASHINGTON — Today, on the one-year anniversary of the horrific mass shooting in Uvalde, TX, that took the lives of 19 children and two teachers, AAPI Victory Alliance remembers the victims of this heinous act and calls out how little Republicans in Congress have done to prevent the next mass shooting.

AAPI Victory Alliance Executive Director Varun Nikore issued the following statement:

“Nevaeh Bravo, Jacklyn Cazares, Makenna Elrod, Jose Flores Jr., Eliahna Garcia, Irma Garcia, Uziyah Garcia, Amerie Garza, Jayce Luevanos, Xavier Lopez, Tess Mata, Maranda Mathis, Eva Mireles, Alithia Ramirez, Annabell Rodriguez, Maite Rodriguez, Alexandria  Rubio, Layla Salazar, Jailah Silguero, Eliahna Cruz Torres, and Rojelio Torres.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the families who lost loved ones on this day.

“It has been a whole year and this nation is still plagued by an epidemic of gun violence. In the wake of the Robb Elementary School shooting, President Biden signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act—the first gun violence prevention law in three decades. It was a good initial step and it cannot be the last. As the threat of guns to our communities evolves so must our response—this crisis is not over.

Since Uvalde, mass shootings have continued to shatter communities across the country from Highland Park, IL to Monterey Park, CA to Allen, TX. There has been one mass shooting per week on average so far this year—yet time and time again Republicans in Congress stonewall any gun safety legislation proposed. Every reform stalled is another location added to the list, another child who won’t be coming home for dinner, and another grieving family asking why.

“So we call on Congress to answer why: Why have you made gun violence prevention an issue of politics instead of preservation of life? Why have you stood idly by while mass shootings in America have become a norm? Why won’t you join Democrats in enacting legislation to save lives?

“We won't give up in our fight for safer communities, schools, and a future where we are all protected from the threat of gun violence.”
