STATEMENT: AAPI Victory Alliance on Indigenous People’s Day, Shared Threat of Climate Change

WASHINGTON — This Indigenous People’s Day, we celebrate the culture and resilience of native communities and re-commit to following the lead of our Indigenous community members in protecting our shared resources.

AAPI Victory Alliance Executive Director Varun Nikore issued the following statement:
“On Indigenous People’s Day we honor the American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians who have made invaluable contributions to the fabric of our society. We also honor their enduring resilience and resistance in the face of multiple challenges including persecution and climate change. Rising temperatures and environmental degredation threaten all of our livelihoods and economic freedom - but we know our Indigenous communities will be disproportionately impacted. We must follow the lead of Native communities everywhere who have long sounded the alarm on climate justice. AAPI Victory Alliance re-commits to environmental protections for the ancestral lands of Indigenous people, and their fight for sovereignty.”
