STATEMENT: AAPI Victory Alliance Commemorates 30th Anniversary of the Los Angeles Uprising

WASHINGTON – In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Los Angeles uprising, or “Saigu,” AAPI Victory Alliance reflects on the progress of community leaders from diverse coalitions to build bridges between historically disenfranchised communities and recommit to fighting systematic injustice.

AAPI Victory Alliance Executive Director Varun Nikore issued the following statement:

“As we reflect on this 30th anniversary of the Los Angeles Uprising, or what is known as “Saigu” in the Korean community, AAPI Victory Alliance recommits to working with our partners to continue fighting injustice.

“Events in the last couple of years, including the murder of George Floyd and the rise in anti-Asian violence, remind us that our liberations are jointly tied. Reflecting on the intentional Black-Asian community building in the last 30 years after the unrest, I am confident that we have a strong and diverse coalition to lean on as we continue addressing systemic injustices and also healing our communities.”
